You are a fresher, starting out on your college life. You will finally have time to explore the campus, go out with friends, explore the city and much more. All of us at Texas Movers Group know how fun and exciting moving can be as long as everything makes it there in one piece.

But, what should you pack for going to a hostel? Being in a hostel is much different from being in a hotel or a lodge.

You’ll be sharing your room with many other people, and you will have shared access to certain areas. How do you pack for a hostel?

We thought we’d cut through the confusion and share our perfect hostel packing list for freshers, a list of essentials that will help you stay organized and comfortable.

A Basic Packing List

At a minimum, you will need a towel, toiletries (shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste, etc), and a clean set of clothes to stay in the hostel.

Blankets

One of the most important things you need for a hostel is a blanket. You will most probably be using the hostel common room to stay warm, so it is quite important that you have one.

Laundry Essentials

You’ll have to do a lot of laundry when you’re in a hostel. Your laundry bag will get wet if you don’t take appropriate precautions.

Just make sure that you pack some of the essentials such as; a cloth or towel to dry your clothes and socks to keep your feet dry, and you are all set.

Gloves

Gloves are one of man’s best creations. Not only do they keep your hands warm but they protect as well. Make sure that you have a pair of thick gloves that you can keep your hands warm.

Long-Sleeved Shirt

A long-sleeved shirt is a must-have for when the weather starts getting chilly. They can also protect your arms from getting sunburned.

Detergent and Fabric Softener

Buy plenty of detergent and fabric softener. You will be going through many different outfits and will sweat a lot while commuting between college and the hostel.

You might also have a few guests in the room at one point. Thus, you will definitely need a separate pack of fabric softener and detergent, which is not too expensive.

Laundry Bag or Basket

Your hostel room will usually be a combination of communal areas and private bedrooms, so you should always make sure you have a separate laundry bag and basket for your needs. Make sure you get a good basket that can hold all of your clothes, as there’s a risk of damage when the basket gets filled to the brim.

Plastic Tray

With hostel mess, dishes and other supplies like plates, cups and cutlery, you need a plastic tray to help you keep everything in order. This will make sure you have an organized and hassle-free life.

Lighting Unit

Most of the bedrooms in a hostel will be in low-light conditions, so you need to use a good lamp. It doesn’t have to be one of those one million candela ones, but it needs to be bright enough to read by at the very least.

Clothing Hangers

These days, most hostels have provided their own dorms and most students opt for this. Hangers will help you to avoid any unnecessary clutter while packing for your hostel stay.

Pillows and pillow cases

A pillow and pillowcase will provide ultimate comfort for your hostel accommodation. Plus, pillowcases can double as a way to pack a set of clean and dirty clothes so that you can wash the dirty clothes after each use. You may need to add a small mattress cover, depending on the kind of mattress you’re going to be sleeping on

Personal Hygiene Items

Just like the personal care items, you’ll need some of this in the hostel too. You’ll need to take soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, perfume and so on.

If you want to save a bit of money, make sure you pack everything in a small bottle so that you don’t run out of it in a hurry.

Communication and Charging Devices

In a hostel, communication is crucial. You’ll need to have a local sim card with you for calling people from your college, asking for directions and more.

However, you will also want to have a decent pair of headphones or speakers. If you’re on a call and you are told that they are ready to start dinner, you don’t want to have to stop the conversation.

If your friend has to get up to take a call, it will be distracting and a bit rude. You’ll also want to keep your charging devices with you.

Make sure you have your portable power bank and power cord so that you can charge your phone in your room. Of course, you will want to use your charger for your laptop as well. In case you are near a  socket, you can charge it on the go.

Toiletries and Other Essentials

When it comes to carrying toiletries and other essentials, you need a sturdy backpack that can carry your toiletries along. Remember to take your toothbrush, soap, toothpaste, shower gel, and all the things that are deemed as part of your standard bathroom kit.

Bathrobe, Jumper or Pajamas?

Coming back from a night out in the city, you will be very tired and might not even have the energy to get changed. A bathrobe will be a necessity in your room.

If you don’t have one, a simple jumpsuit will keep you warm, especially in winter. The bottoms and sleeves will be able to keep you comfortable.

But, you should also bring clothes that will let you express your individuality, so make sure you pack things that are either bright, bold, or with a twist!
